Clothes for Work: Patagonia, www.patagonia.com Where the rubber meets the road in business and the environment. The problem with these clothes is that it takes so long to wear them out! The first guy I knew that had a Patagonia pullover about 15 years ago was Ken Bates of Cloudburst Boat Works in Eureka. He loved it and is still wearing it on his commercial fishing expeditions in the North Pacific! They may cost more but you get what you pay for. These clothes are definitely sustainable. A good example for the construction industry. Current Systems and Products: Environmental Building News www.buildinggreen.com More than just news, Alex Wilson and crew in their feature articles give us lowly builders the in-depth knowledge we need to bring green building concepts, materials, and methods successfully into our everyday world. Building Professionals: Green Building Alliance www.gballiance.com Working out of the Santa Barbara area of California this small group of building professionals have taken a team approach to green building. From design, engineering, construction, energy systems, interior design, landscaping, to land use, clients can pick a team that is on the same green page of a project. This is a for profit organization and is one of the few of its kind in the country. Woodworkers: Architectural Woodworks, www.architectural-woodwork.com Based in Santa Paula, California, Gary Bulla's company makes cabinets from salvaged and sustainably harvested woods. See my home page photo on the right for a sample of their work. No one makes cabinets better than this. Lumber and Materials: Hayward Lumber, www.haywardlumber.com Every building contractor that uses wood (and their favorite lumber yard owner) should read 'Clearcut, The Tragedy of Industrial Forestry,' published in 1993 by Sierra Club Books and Earth Island Press. After wiping the tears away I guarantee that the next batch of framing lumber you buy will be from a place that sells sustainably harvested lumber like Hayward Lumber. I do. Check out the 'Green Building Materials' section of their web site. Pacific Coast Lumber, www.pacificcoastenterprises.com Located on the Central Coast of California, a great source for custom milled lumber from local salvaged wood and sustainably grown trees. They also have some good looking Adrondack chairs for sale at a reasonable price. Eco Timber, www.ecotimber.com A good source for sustainable hardwoods. |
